Casa de Tortugas - Stories

The yard work never ends

Our property is 29 acres and is mostly jungle. Other than some walking paths, we only really maintain the first couple acres. This gives us a nice living area while maintaining the natural beauty around us as much as possible. Our goal is to live with nature, not fight against it.

When we purchased the property back in 2018, the top of the hill where the house was to be built was cleared all the way around. Over the next few years, we paid a maintenance crew to keep the area clear from the building site down to the dock as well as the path all the way around the property. But the portion on the hill behind the house grew rather tall.

This week, Tina and I decided it was time to clean things up again. We started by removing a dead tree down by the dock. It was leaning quite a bit and branches kept falling. We used part of the tree as a bench where we can sit and watch the water.

After that, we moved to the top of the hill behind the house. We want to be able to see well into the jungle like we could when we first found the property. There was a fallen tree that needed to be removed along with a lot of really tall plants. I used the weed eater with the metal cutting blade to cut things down quite a bit. Tina did most of the cleanup, making piles and breaking up as much of the wood as possible.

We are only doing a couple hours of work each day. We like to work in the early morning before it gets too hot. Cutting down the area requires a couple passes with the weed eater. First a quick pass to clear out the bulk. Then the fallen branches and most of the debris needs to get pulled out of the way. Finally, we go back for another pass with the week eater and more cleanup.

Once complete, it should be fairly easy to keep the area clear.
