Building our porch railing

The main portion of the house is more than 10 feet off the ground, so it is important to have a safe railing on the porch.

We started off with nothing keeping us in. We were expecting that to be scary, but it really wasn't. The porch is so large and the walk way around the house is very wide, so at no point did we ever feel like we might fall off.

The process of adding the railing was quite time consuming and was intermixed with other projects. We had to sand all the boards, and there were a lot. We installed the posts and top railings, then came back to add the X patterns. The openings are all slightly different so every one had to be measured and custom cut. Every day that we weren't working on something else, we came out and added a few more sections until the entire porch rail was finally complete.
