Casa de Tortugas - Stories

Our boat almost sank today!

Our boat nearly sank today!

Ok, I might be exaggerating just a little... (or a lot)

We installed a water sensor in our boat's console. At first, the darn thing falsely went off a lot at first because I set it directly on the wood floor and the slightest moisture would trick the sensor.

So I moved it to a much better location where the sensor wouldn't get tricked, or so I thought.

Today the darn thing started going off again and looking at the security camera, I couldn't see any water in the boat, so I was mad. I figured it was acting up again so I switched it off.

After the rain let up, I decided to go down and deal with this faulty sensor. When I got the boat I realized there were 5-6 inches of standing water in it and the bilge pump was not running. In the back it was even deeper, maybe 7 or 8 inches! OH NO! So I opened up the access panel to check the pump and found some leaves had jammed the float so it couldn't turn the pump on. I removed the leaves and the pump started working. In a few minutes the boat was fully drained.

The sensor actually did its job perfectly! I take back all the curse words I muttered as I walked down to the boat.

I think the resolution on the camera just wasn't enough for me to be able to identify the small amount of water in the front of the boat. Most of the water was in the back. Had this been a huge storm raging all night, the boat really could have swamped and sunk without that sensor. And had it been dark and rainy, I would have gone down much sooner just to be safe. But being that it was a fairly mild rain I figured it was not a serious problem. At least not serious enough for me to go getting wet over it.

Next time, I will believe the sensor right away.

reply: Now that we have it set up correctly, I will trust any future alerts.
