Casa de Tortugas - Stories

An amazing couple walked over to our property today.

What began as a simple “Who are you?” turned into a genuinely wonderful experience.

Today, our security system alerted us that someone was on our dock. That isn’t unusual, but we always check the cameras to be sure everything is as it should be. It quickly became clear these weren’t our usual dock visitors. When we saw them looking over our boat, there was a moment of concern, so while Tina waited upstairs, I went down to see what was going on.

As it turned out, they were vacationing at a resort a little over a mile away and had simply walked the beach until they reached our place. That alone felt pretty remarkable. Once I realized they were just curious and friendly travelers, I invited them up to see the house and meet Tina.

We ended up spending a good 40 minutes talking with Dexter and his wife, Leah, sharing our experiences living here in Panama and hearing about their life back home in Trinidad. One detail that really stood out, was that Dexter once completed a sea-to-sea run of 80 miles in about 20 hours without stopping. Hearing that story was incredible.

They were a pleasure to meet. They were warm, friendly and interesting people, and it felt like one of those unexpected encounters that makes life a little richer. I thought it was worth sharing the story and the link that explains Dexter’s sea-to-sea run.
