Casa de Tortugas - Stories

The salt air is harder on equipment than expected.

Living by the ocean is tough anywhere in the world. After spending so much time on the Oregon coast, we knew salt air was hard on equipment. What we did not fully grasp was just how aggressive it could be until we lived here.

Everything rusts or slowly corrodes. It is constant. We either keep things oiled or deal with the buildup. We have already lost several tools to rust. The safety hook on the boat keeps getting shorter as the pole gradually disappears. The burners on our water heater are giving us trouble. The steel plates on the stove are wearing down, losing a thin layer of material and heading toward replacement. We even had to replace a part on one of the chainsaws after rust ate through a wire.

We expected most of this. We just did not expect it to happen so quickly.

Fortunately, we are handy enough to stay on top of the maintenance instead of hiring help or replacing equipment over and over. That would get expensive very fast.
