We have wanted a kayak for a while. With both of us having shoulder issues, we decided to go with a pedal kayak.
We also wanted to get a single kayak that we can both use together. There are several brands making pedal kayaks. The Hobie is the most expensive of the ones we looked at but it has a couple advantages for us.
First we were able to test drive one a few years ago in Portland. If you want to try one, call around, many Hobie dealers offer test drives.
Another huge things for us is that the Hobie is the type of drive. The Hobie uses two fins on each pedal set. Those pedals move back and forth like a fish tail. The others all use props like a motor boat. This is fine in many cases, but in our case, we have a lot of sea gras around out property and very shalow areas. Only the Hobie can deal with these istuations easily.
On Friday January 24 of 2025, The kayak arrived in town and I had to take the boat in to get is. The boat is pretty heavy but I managed to muscle it into the shed. We will be picking up a kayak cart in the near future. By itself, the kayak weighs 92 pounds. Once the seats and pedals are in place, the weight goes up to 124 pounds.
The wind was fairly gusty making it a challenge to get the boat docked, but I managed and got everything into the shed. Below you can find some images and a video of the kayak on its first day on the island.
Getting the kayak off the boat
Taking the kayak out for the first time. It will take a little practice to feel comfortable pedaling and keeping the boat going in the desired direction. This short trip was a lot of fun. After about an hour of being out on the water, I already feel really good about it and think I have my rigging set the way I like it. I can't wait for Tina to come out with me. This will be a really fun way to get around and explore a little.
